Mandafofanda Reads Lots

The world isn't just the way it is. It is how we understand it, no?

And in understanding something, we bring something to it, no?
Doesn't that make life a story?

- Yann Martel, Life of Pi

Daughter of Smoke & Bone - Laini Taylor I wanted to love this book. And I absolutely loved the first half of it. Karou, Zuzana and Kaz were interesting and real characters grounded in the modern world. Brimstone was mysterious and complex. The worldbuilding and prose was beautiful. I loved how the setting was in Prague, a place I've never been but would love now to see in person (and find the Poison Kitchen!).

I guess the issues for me was the love story between Karou and Akiva, as well as the reveal of her past. I swear it was near the middle of the book that she was told that the person "knew who she was" but then it dragged out several several chapters to actually reveal the darned thing. The love story was sweet, but not what I consider too much to be "epic".

All in all, I'll most likely continue to read the sequel to find out what happened to this amazing blue-haired girl, but I'm not holding my breath.
